Painting is like meditation

Gita Smite takes us to her country side, sitting on the porch warmed by the summer sun and taking all of us to her colorful autumn...

The very process of being in the studio is kind of a divorce from daily life. At first you think how to do everything better. Then you order the sub-frame, stretch the canvas, prime it, then paint on it and make layers… Layer after layer, until you are on a cloud created by paints and painting. Gita Smite loved drawing already in Janis Rozentals art school, most of all portraits. And this pleasure to draw portraits is still alive. Old Masters have given her a constant influence, especially Vermeer, that she saw in National Gallery in London. His paintings seemed like a miracle. So much that she stopped in front of them and froze.

It’s all a path to discover myself. Succumbing to what some refer to as nature’s clock, and others as the rhythm of the soul. From Midsummer to Midsummer, from season to season, and from painting to painting. The painting of Gita Smite takes us to a ritual, becoming a part of your personal space.
